Exploring the Okanagan: A Mother-Daughter Adventure on Pedego Ebikes at Kalamalka Lake!

August 29, 2024

One never regrets spending time on a lake in the Okanagan, especially when that lake is Kalamalka, and the ride is on a Pedego electric bike from Pedego Oyama.

On a mother and daughter trip to the Okanagan from the Kootenays, Denise and her daughter Ciara decided to mix up their usual rush and shop routine by stopping at Pedego Oyama and renting two ebikes for an afternoon.

Conveniently located just off Highway 97 at Pelmewash Parkway, Pedego Oyama offers immediate access to the famed Okanagan Rail Trail with sections along Wood Lake and Kalamalka Lake. A long time BC resident, this was Denise’s first time visiting this nestled gem of a region.

Kalamalka Lake, often called the “Lake of a Thousand Colours,” is a stunning gem in the Okanagan Valley. Locals affectionately call it Kal Lake. Nestled amidst picturesque landscapes, it offers pristine beaches, a beautiful shoreline trail, and a serene environment perfect for relaxation and outdoor adventure. It’s also a must-visit destination for ebike enthusiasts.

Cover Lots of Ground While Making Lots of Stops

Denise and Ciara both rode Pedego Boomerang ebikes, setting off on the Okanagan Rail Trail on a scorching 38-degree July day. The breeze off the lake was refreshing and they made a couple of stops along the way to stick their feet in the water.

“The vibrant turquoise hues of the lake were mesmerizing, shifting with the sunlight – more breathtaking in person than in any photo,” said Denise. “I couldn’t believe how blue the water was—it felt like we were in a tropical paradise right here in the Okanagan.”

The Boomerangs, known for their low step-through frame and comfortable ride, made it easy for both of them to hop on and off while they enjoyed their surroundings. At one point, Denise and Ciara came across some young kids selling popsicles at the side of the trail. They couldn’t resist stopping to watch the boats launch while enjoying their icy treats.

“I really enjoyed the afternoon ebiking with my mom. It was a nice change from the hiking we usually do where we are tired at the end of our journey. We went far and saw so much,” said Ciara.

After their delightful ride, they headed back to Oyama and had the best lunch at Pane Vino Pizzeria, a charming restaurant right beside the Pedego shop. The thin crust pizza was simply the best, and the lemonade was incredibly refreshing. It was the perfect way to end their adventure.

“Why not balance that Kelowna shopping trip with your daughter by doing something in nature? It was a refreshing change from our usual trips to the airport or shopping (which I usually dread). We had some really nice conversation and felt relaxed when we returned to our trip home,” said Denise. “It was also really nice to get that perspective of the Okanagan area. We will definitely be back with the whole family.”

Connecting with Kids in Nature

Connecting with children through activities in nature can be incredibly beneficial for both parents and kids. Here are a few key reasons:

  1. Improved Communication and Stronger Bonds: Spending time outdoors together can enhance communication and strengthen family bonds. Activities like hiking, camping, or even a simple walk in the park provide opportunities for meaningful conversations and shared experiences.
  2. Physical and Mental Health Benefits: Nature-based activities can improve physical health by encouraging exercise and reducing stress. They also boost mental well-being, helping to reduce anxiety and depression.
  3. Enhanced Creativity and Imagination: Being in nature stimulates creativity and imagination in children. The unstructured environment allows kids to explore, invent games, and engage in imaginative play.
  4. Environmental Stewardship: Regular exposure to nature helps children develop a sense of responsibility and care for the environment. This can lead to a lifelong appreciation and commitment to protecting natural spaces.
  5. Cultural and Family Traditions: Engaging in nature-based activities can deepen appreciation for family traditions and cultural heritage. It provides a way to pass down stories, skills, and values from one generation to the next.
