The Heartbeat of Our Communities: Why Shopping Local Matters

September 26, 2024

Our Pedego store owners believe in more than just electric bikes. They believe in community, passion, and the power of giving back.

Local businesses are the lifeblood of our communities. They’re not faceless corporations; they’re our neighbours. They create a sense of identity, character, and pride.

Pedego store owners are local. You’ll see their t-shirts on the trails, their logo on their vehicles in the school pick-up zone, and their banners at local sports games. They worked establishing the trails you cycle on. They advocated for better bike parking. They championed small acts of kindness.

Businesses often sponsor community events, donate to charities, and rally behind causes. When we shop locally, we contribute to a virtuous cycle of giving back. Money spent in the community stays in the community generating resilience.

Pedego Delta: Riding Local, Changing Lives

At Pedego Delta, their commitment to community extends beyond electric bikes and the thrill of the ride, beyond the shop doors and onto the hockey rink.

Supporting South Delta Minor Hockey Association

Pedego Delta proudly partnered with the South Delta Minor Hockey Association during the HarvestFest Music event held in Ladner from September 15-17. How? By providing bike parking! It’s more than convenience; it’s a statement.

“We wanted to provide money for kids to play hockey who otherwise could not afford it,” says Murray. “When you buy from us, you’re not just getting an ebike; you’re contributing to the dreams of these future stars. It’s a win-win.”

Murray witnesses the passion, the early morning practices, and the dreams of young athletes. But he also knows that not every child has the same opportunities. So, he decided to make a difference and they raised enough money to provide registration funds for two kids to play hockey this year.

“These aren’t just numbers; they’re dreams taking shape. Imagine the joy on their faces as they lace up their skates, hit the ice, and chase their goals,” says Murray.

So, whether you’re cruising along the waterfront or tackling hills, remember that your choice matters. Pedego Delta isn’t just a store; it’s a hub of possibilities. Let’s ride together, support local, and create a brighter tomorrow—one pedal stroke at a time!

Pedego Edmonton: Heart in Children’s Healthcare Charities

Pedego Edmonton is more than just an ebike store. They’re a catalyst for positive change and a beacon of hope. Their commitment extends beyond the thrill of electric bike rides with Michelle and Seann Childs supporting many charities in their community.

“Two remarkable charities hold our hearts, and we’re honoured to pedal alongside them,” says Michelle.

Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation and Cystic Fibrosis Canada

The Stollery isn’t just a hospital; it’s a sanctuary of healing, resilience, and unwavering love, explains Michelle as she shares her own family’s health story.

“To call the Stollery close to our hearts would be an understatement. When our daughter, Elina, was a mere two weeks old, we embarked on a journey of trepidation and fear within these walls,” she says. “For countless families like ours, it’s the place where hope finds its wings. The Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation tirelessly champions the health and well-being of our littlest warriors.”

“We believe in action, not just words. Over the past two years, we’ve donated two ebikes to the Snowflake Gala. These bikes symbolize freedom, joy, and the promise of brighter days. They’re more than wheels; they’re a lifeline connecting us to the heartbeats of children who fight battles we can’t imagine,” Michelle says.

Their commitment to Cystic Fibrosis (CF) Canada also runs deep. They’re donating an ebike to the Face Off for CF Gala, where Ryan Nugent Hopkins from the Edmonton Oilers also joins the fight. But Pedego Edmonton’s involvement goes beyond ebike donations at events.

“We’ve been volunteers for years. Every pedal stroke is a breath of hope for those battling CF,” says Michelle. “Cystic Fibrosis isn’t just a disease; it’s a relentless force that demands everything from those it touches. CF Canada fights back, raising funds for a cure or better treatments. When our daughter was born, we heard the stark truth, ‘Don’t expect a cure.’ But we refused to accept defeat.”

Fortunately, Elina is now on a treatment program that means she can lead a more normal life, fewer medications, fewer doctor visits and more time with friends.

“We are lucky beyond words, and we know every day what an amazing gift we have been given. We want that for everyone that is still suffering with this horrible disease,” says Michelle.

At Pedego Edmonton, their wheels spin not only for exhilarating rides but also for compassion, resilience, and the promise of brighter tomorrows.

Let’s ride together, making a difference one pedal at a time!

Pedego St. John’s: Fueling Dreams, Championing Young Athletes

Pedego St. John’s is a local business nestled in the heart of Newfoundland and with that heart, they take immense pride in supporting causes that matter to their neighbours.

Minor hockey is more than a sport — it’s a way of life. The rink echoes with dreams, resilience, and the unmistakable sound of blades carving the ice. And at Pedego St. John’s, they’re all about backing those who lace up their skates and chase their goals with unwavering determination.

Meet Ryan O’Toole, the indomitable goalie for the U15 A CBR Renegades. Ryan embodies the spirit of the St. John’s community: gritty, disciplined, and fiercely committed, says Pedego St. John’s owner Mike Hall.

“We are proud to support Ryan and his team as they share our philosophy here at Pedego. Teamwork will always pave the road to success,” says Hall.

“Ryan, may your glove hand remain steady, your determination unyielding, and your victories abundant. As you guard the net, remember that the road to success is paved not just with asphalt but with the bonds of community. Wishing you and your team many victories!”

Pedego Canada: Empowering Seniors through Transportation

Even our ebike head office Pedego Canada, is all about supporting local charities in their hometown of Nelson, BC. That’s why they’re proud to fund Kootenay Seniors Transportation Program, a vital program under the Nelson CARES Society umbrella.

This program bridges gaps, providing safe, affordable, and reliable transportation for seniors in Nelson and the surrounding areas. Whether it’s a doctor’s appointment, a social outing, or a grocery run, Kootenay Seniors ensures that no senior is left behind.

“Seniors deserve dignity, independence, and joy. When we support Kootenay Seniors, we’re saying, “You matter.” It’s about creating a future where every senior thrives, where no one feels isolated or forgotten,” says Pedego Canada owner Mike Clyde.

“As a part of this amazing vibrant community, I am very happy to be able to support Nelson CARES in their work to help vulnerable members of our city.”

When you choose Pedego Canada, you’re not just riding; you’re igniting change. Let’s pedal toward a world where every senior’s laughter echoes across the streets, where dignity knows no age, and where joy rides alongside us.

Pedego Prince Edward County: Community Leadership, Advocacy in Action

Being active in community goes way back for Pat Mahoney of Pedego Prince Edward County. Pat, co-owner of Pedego Prince Edward County, has been instrumental in the Millennium Trail Upgrade Project. As the Chair of the Prince Edward County Trails committee, he helped raise over $120,000 for the trail’s refurbishment.

With over 40 years of cycling advocacy, Pat’s efforts will enable the resurfacing of a 48-kilometre trail, enhancing outdoor activities like walking, cycling, and electric biking.

Pedego PEC is also a Rainbow Registered® business. It means they’ve met a stringent set of standards to ensure LGBT+ customers feel accepted. For Pedego Prince Edward County owner Gillian Mahoney it means valuing and respecting basic human connection.

“Rainbow registration signifies that our business prioritizes inclusivity, safety, and a sense of belonging,” she says. “It ensures that every visitor, family, and individual — whether they identify as a queer ally or are part of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community — feels acknowledged and understood when they walk through our doors.”

Pedego Fredericton: Part of a Huggable Legend

Jim Gilbert’s motto is “Happy, Huggable & Helpful. Jim is the owner of Wheels & Deals and Pedego Fredericton where he has a history of looking after their customers. The tradition doesn’t end there. Huggable initiatives are well known in the maritime community including their huggable snack initiative.

Imagine a child’s face lighting up as they receive a warm, comforting hug along with a wholesome snack. These small acts of kindness not only address hunger but also create a sense of care and support within the community.

Pedego Fredericton also participates in 200K Sock Day where they collect socks for those in their community experiencing homelessness. They also recently generously welcomed people into their store during a local snowstorm and power outage offering up coffee and wifi.

“We go out of our way to look after people … caring is what makes us huggable,” says Jim.

Through these thoughtful actions, they pedal toward a brighter, more connected neighbourhood — one huggable snack, warm sock, and open door at a time.
