Electric Bikes Are The Solution To Rising Gas Prices
Last week the gasoline prices in British Columbia were the highest in Canada’s history. Some stations were selling it for $1.73 per litre, which meant an average 40-litre tank of gas cost over $70 to fill. Compare that to three years ago when the average fill-up was $40. And the experts are saying these higher prices are the new norm. In a way this is good – we need to curb our appetite for fossil fuels that are contributing to global warming. But in some ways…ouch! It’s like your wallet is punching you in the kidney every time you get fuel!
Add to that the expense of parking, maintenance fees, insurance costs and overall depreciation of your vehicle with use, and it’s obvious that owning a gas-powered vehicle is becoming cost prohibitive.
But we need to get from point A to point B, right? So what’s a solution to rising gas prices?
Well, let us share another figure with you: it costs $0.10 to fuel up an electric bike.
So believe us when we say, electric bikes are definitely a solution to rising gas prices. Two years ago we wrote an article that explained the estimated cost savings between riding a Pedego electric bike versus a car. Back then the fuel costs that were taken into consideration for the infographic below were $1.08. Now they’re 44% higher so, naturally, car costs per kilometre are also higher. However, electricity rates have barely fluctuated meaning the cost of operating an electric bike have remained the same. Plus, it’s free to “park” an electric bike and no insurance are licensing fees are required.
Of course, not everyone can simply give up their car — despite the rising costs of owning an automobile, we live in a country where things are spread out and we don’t have the same public transit infrastructure as, say, Europe. That said, do families really need two cars? Consider that the Pedego Stretch electric cargo bike can easily transport you and your child to and from school, along with up to 200 pounds of other gear for good measure. And it costs less than a dollar to charge a battery that can last as far as 100 kilometres depending on the terrain and how much pedalling you do.

And that touches on another benefit of owning an electric bike: it’s positive impact on your health. How much value would you put on having good health? Probably a lot, right? So knowing that researchers and doctors have proven that riding electric bicycles improve your health, the impact on your health is definitely worth more than the cost of a $0.10 fill up.
So when you hear people bring up the rising costs of gasoline and the fact there’s no end in sight to the increases, remember the magic number of $0.10 per fill-up. Yes, electric bikes are the solution to rising gas prices.
And let’s not forget that e-bikes are fun to ride. So even if you’re ok with the rising costs of fuel and just want one as a recreational vehicle, you’re still going to get a lot of value out of it. And if after considering all those factors as well as the cost-savings you decide a Pedego Canada electric bike might be a good fit for you rather than that gas-guzzling pickup truck, then please browse our many makes and models on our electric bike page.
